Great Cycling Cities?

10 Other Great Biking Cities (USA)
All the usual suspects are included on this list:

Portland
What I like about this website is that bicycles have NOT been given their own separate part of the website, rather, cycling has been included alongside other transport options. Well done!

Seattle
This is an example of the more usual scenario, cycling has been given its own section "bike program". Some good information here, but other road users also need to know about things like the "Bicycle Traffic Codes", otherwise you end up with the situation we have in NSW, ie, only cyclists seem to know the road rules regarding cycling, motorists don't appear to be aware if those rules in general.

San Francisco
Another example of "bike program" webpages. I do like the idea of awarding cities Bicycle Friendly Community Awards though.

Davis
We've met Davis before, lots of students, lots of bicycles. Reminds me of Canberra.

Boulder
Here cycling becomes "another great option", along with walking and carpooling.

Tucson
In Tucson we see cycling linked up with pedestrians instead of cars. Note to Tucson, cycling is not an alternative to walking, it is an alternative to driving!

Madison
The best we can say here is that atleast cycling has been put under transport. What a pity cycling has one again been linked in with pedestrians through the "Pedestrian-Bicycle Program"

Chicago
I've been in love with Chicago ever since I first saw their bike stations (which are also presesnt in Seattle). Again, separate pages are devoted to the "Bike Program" but there is a wealth of information here.

Austin
Another "Bicycle and Pedestrian Program". Same comment as before, cycling is not an alternative to walking, it is a real alternative to driving though.

Philadelphia
This is one of the most interesting conceptual links I've ever met for cycling. Cycling is included under "streets", along with other important transport issues such as trash collection, potholes, hazardous waste, illegal dumping and leaf collection. I don't know about you, but it gives me the impression that Philadelphia thinks cycling is rubbish and needs to be removed from the street.

So, is Australia ready to present its list of great cycling cities yet?

Apart from my own home town, a couple of nominations in Victoria:

Wangaratta is just starting to recognise the tourism benefits that arise from being the starting point of the Murray-to-Mountains Rail Trail

Shepparton is developing the Yanha Gurtji Shared Path Network, but is a pretty pleasant place to ride with or without trails. Also the home of the Fruit Loop.

Geelong offers plenty of riding options. I haven't actually ridden there yet, but I'll probably try to get along to Amy's Ride next year.
